The coatimundi, also known as the coati, is a mammal native to Central and South America, but has also been found in Florida. It is a member of the raccoon family and is characterized by its long snout and striped tail. In Florida, coatimundis are typically found in the southern part of the state, particularly in the Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve. They are primarily diurnal, or active during the day, and are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of insects, fruits, and small vertebrates. While they are not considered a threatened species, coatimundis are protected and should not be kept as pets.
